More than 4,329 kilometers long, Chile, located in the very south of the American continent, offers some of the most varied and extreme climatic and geographic conditions on the planet:
In the North is the most arid desert in the world; in the Center there are Mediterranean landscapes; in the South, forests and lakes; in the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, fiords, glacier fields and stormy pampas; and in the Antarctic, eternal whiteness.
In the Pacific, there's Easter Island with its many mysteries and Juan Fernandez, with a unique ecosystem and species of flora and fauna existing nowhere else in the world.
The most important factors that controls the climate in Chile are the Pacific Anticyclone, the southern circumpolar low pressure area, the cold Humboldt current and the Andes Mountains. Despite Chile's long coast, some interior regions may experience wide temperature oscillations and cities such as San Pedro de Atacama, may even experience a continental climate. In the extreme northeast and southeast the border of Chile extends beyond the Andes into the Altiplano and the Patagonian plains, giving these regions climate patterns similar to those seen in Bolivia and Argentina respectively.
